Kathmandu Bhaktapur 01 Bhaktapur Durbar Square From West With Shiva Kedarnath Temple Bhaktapur (1401m) is a traffic-free city 13 km east of Kathmandu, with cobblestone streets linking a string of temples, courtyards and squares. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is one of the world heritage sites in Nepal, reflecting the city's rich culture, art and architectural design. The 1934 earthquake destroyed many of Bhaktapur’s Durbar Square temples. Here is a view of Bhaktapur Durbar Square from the west, with the Golden Gate and Palace of 55 Windows on the left, the Vatsala Durga Temple in the centre, and Shiva Kedarnath Temple on the right.

Much of Bernardo Bertolucci¹s movie Little Buddha was filmed near the Vatsala Temple. On the left is Chyasilin Mandapam, an octagonal temple rebuilt in 1990 after it was destroyed by fire in 1934.

The large white Fasidega Temple on the right sits on a six-level plinth and is dedicated to Shiva.

Kathmandu Bhaktapur 04-1 Bhaktapur Durbar Square Golden Gate The Golden Gate, or Sun Dhoka, in Bhaktapur’s Durbar Square is actually made of brass, and is one of the most important pieces of art in the whole Kathmandu Valley. The gate is the entrance to the main courtyard of the 55 Window Palace. The gate and palace were built by King Bhupatindra Malla but were not completed until 1754.
