Cotopaxi and Chimborazo Books
1. Travels Amongst the Great Andes of the Equator (1987 colour Illustrated edition)
by Edward Whymper.
This is a new edition with introduction and 32 pages of excellent colour photographs by Loren McIntyre.
The cover photo is Cotopaxi.
From December 1879 to June 1880, Whymper, along with Jean-Antoine Carrel and Louis Carrel,
turned his attention to the Andes peaks of Ecuador. In researching the effects
of altitude, Whymper and his two guides climbed eleven peaks, including seven
first ascents, including Chimborazo on January 4, 1880. The 180 illustrations, woodcut by Whymper himself, bring the
story to life, and are almost as good as photographs.
I enjoyed this book of discovery and exploration.
2. World Mountaineering: The World's Great Mountains by the World's Great Mountaineers
by Audrey Salkeld
- briefly details 52 of the world's finest climbs, including Chimborazo, documented with photos,
excellent aerial-type maps, and a basic climbing history.
There are four pages on Chimborazo.
